hate-it-when-that-happens
i've had good luck using aluminum tape (the soft metal tape used for HVAC)
the adhesive backing helps hold it place and aids in 'stacking' layers for greater thicknesses if needed
and being soft, it's easily cut with scissors and conforms well to whatever you're shimming.....
once it's thoroughly compressed, it should help eliminate 'play'
