I think to be drilling the main gear is not an exercise in good engineering. How much weight will you save?
To do so close the main shaft is even more suicidal when you have a reel that apparently puts out 60lbs of drag and will be fished with heavy braid. A fix will probably be to forget the drilled main gear and if it is to be used for popping get a faster gear ratio.
