Just wanted to follow up on field-testing the TRQ100 aboard a 7-day San Diego long-range trip aboard the Searcher.
Fished the TRQ100's on 8-foot 800L cork-tape handle rods with a 30-pound mono topshot over 40-pound spectra with live sardines, Tady #4/0 light jigs and Sumo #C2 heavy jigs.
The reels perfomed far beyond expectations, with the drag and cranking power amazing for a reel of its' size.
On the 2 reels, over 30 yellowtail from 15 to 35 pounds and a stray 20-pound yellowfin tuna were caught.
Even when one of the larger-grade 35-pound Cedros Island yellowtail sulked deep, the reel cranked on it almost like a 2-speed big game reel in "low".
Our California yellowtail are first cousins to amberjack.
Casting was excellent, and although I rarely use mag cast controls like the one on the TRQ100, I did like the thumbing flange on the spool.
In overall size, it is the same line capacity as the 525MAG, but of course much beefier.
Although we did not catch any albacore, I moved the reels to 800XL's with 20-pound topshots when we tried for them, and once they were properly balanced on the rods with line and rigging attached, you could not tell they were any heavier.
Line capacity was 250 yards of straight 20-pound Big Game mono or 200 yards of 40-pound spectra and a 125 yard topshot of 20-pound Big Game.
Adjust the capacity as you may prefer.
I would say that the reels will fish anything from 15 to 30 pound mono either straight or as a topshot, but anything heavier would get very "wiry" on such a small reel.
For those who like straight braid, the extreme strength and drag power should easily allow use of up to 65-pound test, and as I mentioned earlier, I was able to get more than 24 pounds of max drag.
